Abstract:
The textile industry has discharged absurd amounts of wastewater into water bodies over the years. Contaminants such as textile fibers and pigments enter aquatic ecosystems due to human activity, causing various problems for flora and fauna, particularly some of the textile pigments used, which are known to have carcinogenic properties in both animals and humans. This research proposed the use of microorganisms obtained from Antarctica to degrade these pigments. Three textile pigments sourced from the textile industry (Yellow ME4G, Orange RD, and Red Sam) were utilized, and the degradation capacity of twenty-nine microorganisms was evaluated over 14 days using a spectrophotometer. At the end of the experiment, the microorganism B23.1 managed to degrade the Orange RD pigment by almost 50%, a feat not previously achieved in earlier studies conducted by CIBE. B23.1 also exhibited the presence of the enzyme laccase, which explains its degradation capability. Unique ecosystems like Antarctica are of great interest for research of this kind due to the presence of unique microorganisms that can lead us toward sustainable solutions to combat anthropogenic pollution.

La industria textil ha vertido cantidades absurdas de aguas residuales sobre cuerpos acuáticos a lo largo de los años. Contaminantes como fibras y pigmentos textiles ingresan a ecosistemas acuáticos por actividad humana y causan diversos problemas a la flora y fauna, particularmente algunos de los pigmentos textiles utilizados, ya que se conoce su capacidad carcinógena tanto en animales como seres humanos. En esta investigación se planteó el uso de microorganismos obtenidos en la Antártica para degradar estos pigmentos. Se utilizó tres pigmentos textiles obtenidos de la industria textil (Amarillo ME4G, Naranja RD y Rojo Sam) y se evaluó la capacidad de degradación de 29 microorganismos durante 14 días utilizando un espectrofotómetro. Al final del experimento, el microorganismo B23.1 logró degradar el pigmento Naranja RD en un casi un 50%, algo que no se había logrado en investigaciones anteriores realizadas por el CIBE. B23.1 también mostró la presencia de la enzima lacasa, lo que explica su capacidad de degradación. Ecosistemas con características únicas como la Antártica resultan ser de gran interés para investigaciones de este estilo dado a la presencia de microorganismos únicos con la capacidad de acercarnos a soluciones sostenibles para combatir la contaminación antropogénica.
